Going Back to Your Roots

So I've noticed that there is a HUGE amount of African American women going natural. Maybe it's because I've just moved from a not-so-big city to a more urban and diverse area, but I must say that it's definitely a breath of fresh area to see something other than the usual stick, straight hair that ALWAYS has to lay perfectly in place. Since when did "LONG HAIR, DON'T CARE" become the new style and coarse, natural hair become thought of as "nappy"?

Natural hair is as diverse as it can get, especially since there are so many different textures of hair. I've thought about going natural a couple times, but to be honest, trying to grow out relaxed hair is HARD. It's so much more fragile and I know that the BIG CHOP would not be an option for me. For African American women who feel the pressure to buy every hair product in beauty supply stores in order to attempt (and ultimately fail) to grow their hair down their backs, it takes A LOT of courage and self-confidence to go to that hair salon and cut any significant amount of hair.

That being said, those of you with natural hair have a lot more guts than me or about 95% of the African American population.

Peace. Love. Fashion
